I am a thoracic surgeon scientist practicing out of the Montreal General Hospital. Following my training in general surgery, I completed my clinical Cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre. I trained directly under Dr. Prasad Adusumilli, who developed the first chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy for patients with mesothelioma. This allowed me to witness a mentor develop a translational research program. This work led to the publication of a clinical manuscript relating to the postoperative features of patients on immunotherapy (PMC6357770). This training and education has led to the development of the translational arm of my program. Since my return to McGill University as faculty, I have continued research according to the foundations laid out during my training. I started independent practice in 2018 where I simultaneously began a complex gastro esophageal adenocarcinoma (GEA) clinical program as well as an independent research program focusing on cancer associated inflammation. Due to the novelty of the methodology, I had to establish the living biobank and preliminary sequencing data from scratch. I have developed a busy research program during this time. I have recruited 9 graduate and undergraduate students, with whom I have built a streamlined program assessing systemic inflammation in patients with GEA. I have established relationships with Pharma (BMS) and industry (Nucleocapture). We have one manuscript under review at a high impact journal, and four international presentations were given this year. This work is based on observations of neutrophil and NET accumulation in both the blood and regional lymph nodes before the development of metastasis. This work has laid the foundation for translational studies aimed at mitigating the consequences of systemic inflammation in patients with esophageal malignancies.
