Juan A. Crestanello, M.D., is a consultant and chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2018 and holds the academic rank of professor of surgery, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Crestanello earned his medical degree at the University of the Republic of Uruguay Medical School. He trained in General Surgery at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He then completed his cardiothoracic training at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Crestanello specializes in surgery for valvular heart disease through conventional and minimally invasive approaches. His other clinical interests include cardiac reoperations, radiation- and carcinoid-induced heart disease, adult
congenital heart surgery, and surgery for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Dr. Crestanello's research interests are focused on clinical outcomes after cardiac surgery procedures. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and holds reviewer responsibilities for prominent scientific publications.
In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Crestanello is active in education and has provided mentorship to many medical students and postgraduate students, among others.
Dr. Crestanello is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery where he held leadership roles.
