Dr. Muhammad Aftab is currently an Associate Professor in Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Aftab has surgical expertise in the adult cardiac surgery. He has a particular clinical focus on the surgical treatment of complex aortic aneurysms, aortic root and arch replacement, thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, dissection repairs, high-risk reoperation surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, endovascular aortic repair, and branch devices. His clinical interest also includes CABG, aortic and mitral valve repair, heart transplantation, and TAVR.
In addition to contributing to the development of the University of Colorado Thoracic Aortic Surgery program, Dr. Aftab serves as the chief of the cardiothoracic surgery program at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center. He also leads the aortic surgery program at RMR VA, and serves as the Surgical Director of Lead Extraction Program at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Aftab is an established surgical investigator. His basic science efforts are focused on understanding the mechanisms of spinal cord ischemia and spinal cord, brain, and renal protection after aortic surgery. His research work is funded by the AATS Graham Surgical Investigator Award and recently by the NIH two year developmental research grant (R21). His clinical outcomes research focuses mainly on end-organ protection, particularly brain, renal, and spinal cord protection after cardiac surgery. He is a reviewer of numerous journals and has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.
He is actively teaching, training, and mentoring residents and fellows. Four of his residents and fellows mentees were recently awarded the Best Cardiac Surgery Critical Care Paper Award by the STS at the annual meeting in January 2019, Hawley H. Seiler Resident’s Award by the STSA in November 2019 and the Best cardiac surgery presentation award at the annual meeting of ECTSS in 2022 and 2024.
