Dr. Coselli received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame. During his summers off from college, he returned to Houston and gained invaluable exposure in cardiac surgery at the Texas Heart Institute (THI) under the eyes of Dr. Denton A. Cooley; here, he worked on the pump team and scrubbed in whenever possible. Dr. Coselli attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and graduated from medical school within 3 years. Subsequently, he completed Dr. Michael E. DeBakey’s surgery residency program at Baylor College of Medicine, where he has since remained.
Dr. Coselli is the Executive Vice-Chair of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, holds the Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair, and is Professor of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). He serves within the Cardiovascular Department at The Texas Heart Institute (THI) and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. He was Program Director of the Thoracic Surgery Residency at THI/BCM for two decades and directs the Aortic Fellowship Program at BCM.
Dr. Coselli specializes in diseases of the aorta, and was mentored by the pioneering aortic surgeon, E. Stanley Crawford, as well as legendary cardiothoracic surgeons, Drs. Denton Cooley and Michael E. DeBakey. He has performed more than 10,000 aortic repairs, including over 3,800 of thoracoabdominal aorta, for which he is world-renowned. He has published more than 600 medical manuscripts and delivered over 950 presentations in 39 countries. In 2008, along with colleague Scott A. LeMaire, Dr. Coselli was coeditor of the book Aortic Arch Surgery: Principles, Strategies and Outcomes published by Wiley-Blackwell.
