Dr. Ono was graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1987. He started his career as Cardiothoracic surgeon. After he took his PhD degree, he joined the fellowship program at the Ohio State University Medical Center for advanced training in minimally invasive surgery and heart transplantation from 1999 to 2001. He came back to the University of Tokyo Hospital as a staff surgeon, and established a program of surgery for advanced heart failure. He was appointed as Professor and Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery in 2009. Since then, the advanced heart failure program of the University of Tokyo has grown up to be one of the leading centers in the globe. He has been actively participating in a cooperative development program of the medial devices with School of Engineering and some companies (endoscopic surgical manipulators and an innovative suture device). He was co-appointed as Professor at Research Institute for Biomedical Science and Engineering in 2017, and promoted to the Director in 2024. He was also appointed as Director of Tokyo Biodesign Program in 2019.
He published more than 400 peer review English papers. He is actively involved in many major academic medical societies: President for Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Surgery and Japan Society for Transplantation, and Board Member for Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery, Japanese College of Angiology and Japanese Society for Artificial Organs. He is also a member of many world-leading societies, such as AATS, STS, EACTS, ISHLT, TTS and ASCVTS.
