Dr. Petrov is an endowed professor and Section Chief of the Division of Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery at UTMB Health. Dr. Petrov's clinical expertise encompasses thoracic oncology, with a focus on lung and esophageal cancers, complex chest wall reconstruction, and benign foregut disorders. He is recognized as a expert robotic surgeon and is deeply passionate about interventional bronchoscopy and therapeutic endoscopy, particularly in the areas of third space endoscopy and Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM).
Dr. Petrov is originally from Russia, where he graduated from Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry. After several years of practice in his home country, he immigrated to the United States, where he completed his postgraduate training in general surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center and Albany Medical Center. He further completing his cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Before joining the academic community, Dr. Petrov practiced independently in rural West Virginia and Ohio. He later transitioned to an academic practice at Temple University and Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA. He has been in his current role since 2022.
Dr. Petrov is married to Dr. Kazakova, and together they are raising four wonderful children, aged 17, 15, 11, and 10, who are already expressing interest in pursuing careers in medicine.
