Lana Y Schumacher, MD, FASCS, MASE
Dr. Lana Schumacher is the Chief of Thoracic Surgery for Tufts Medical Center and Tufts Medicine and the Director of the Center of Innovation. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Tufts School of Medicine. Dr. Schumacher received her medical degree from UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles, CA. She completed her surgical internship and residency at Stanford University Hospital in Stanford, CA. and her cardiothoracic fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
Dr. Schumacher is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. She has built a distinguished career as a leader in thoracic surgery, specializing in robotic minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of esophageal and lung diseases. Specializing in advancing robotic thoracic techniques, she contributes significantly to improving patient outcomes through innovative surgical approaches.
Dr. Schumacher is committed to fostering the next generation of surgeons, particularly women in the field. She runs a scholarship program for Women in Thoracic Surgery focused on robotic surgery training. She also leads the Robotic Work Force at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Additionally, she is a faculty member for the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Graham Foundation Robotic Fellowship, sharing her expertise to mentor emerging surgeons.
Dr. Schumacher’s research focuses are on the Integration of AI in the deep analysis of neural networks to enhance outcomes in robotic thoracic surgery and surgical education and training. She further focuses on applications of innovation to improve the outcomes of robotic surgery techniques in the treatment of lung and esophageal cancer.
Recent honors/distinctions include induction into the Masters Academy of Academic Surgery Educations and recipient of AATS/WTS Mid-Career award to support Artificial Intelligence in Thoracic Surgery.
