Dr. Madhuri Rao is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Thoracic and Foregut Surgery with the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Rao completed her early education and medical school in India after which, she spent 3 years in surgical training with the National Helath Service, UK, where she obtained her Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons. She completed her surgical residency at SUNY Downstate, New York, and her Cardiothoracic fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. Her clinical practice includes the breadth of general thoracic surgery including benign and malignant diseases of the lung, esophagus and mediastinum with a special interest in mesothelioma and in minimally invasive and innovative approaches. She serves as the Director of Robotic Thoracic Surgery and also chairs the robotic committee at the University. She has several publications, national and international presentations on these topics. In addition to her clinical and academic responsibilities, she dedicates her time to work on disparities in cancer care. She serves as the Vice-Chair for the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging for the Department of Surgery and is dedicated to directing the efforts in this role to her workplace and the community in general. Developing a global community in surgery is another major focus of Dr. Rao’s career. She is the Co-Chair of International Affairs for the Women in Thoracic Surgery. She is actively invovled with the STS and the ESTS in establishing collaborative educational programs with the cardiothoracic communities in South Asia and other low and middle income countries. In recognition of her work, she has won several awards including the Top Doctors of Minnesota Yearly Recognition (2019 -2023) and the Carolyn Reed Travelling Fellowship Award through the Thoracic Surgery Foundation.
