Dr. Gerald M. Lawrie graduated from The University of Sydney School of Medicine in 1969 supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship. He was awarded the James McRae Yeates Prize for Clinical Surgery. He completed a year of post- graduate education in England with time at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences of the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Dr. Lawrie completed his residency training in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Sydney.
In 1975, Dr. Lawrie completed a Cardiovascular Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine with Dr. DeBakey then worked with him daily for over 20 years. He participated in the surgical care of many notable figures: the Shah of Iran, the President of Turkey, the King of Belgium, and a number of other celebrities. Dr. Lawrie was director of the Thoracic Surgery Residency Program of Baylor College of Medicine in 1992-93. He received several major awards for teaching students and residents.He rose to the rank of professor of surgery and vice chairman of research in the Department of Surgery and Attending Surgeon at The Methodist Hospital.
In 1997, he co-founded Texas Surgical Associates, Houston's largest single specialty group of cardiovascular surgeons. In 2008 he became Michael E. DeBakey Distinguished Chair in Cardiac surgery. In 2013, Dr. Lawrie joined Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Organization and professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.He has continued to operate upon many notable patients including former First Lady Barbara Bush and has published over 300 scientific papers and lectured nationally and internationally. His research is on the structure and function of the mitral valve and improved methods of cardiac valve repair. Under his direction Houston Methodist became a Center of Excellence for HCM surgery of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association. Dr. Lawrie practices in the Texas Medical Center at the Houston Methodist, Hospital.
