Dr. Thomas Beaver is The Grant and Shirle Herron Chair and Professor and Chief of The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at The University of Florida College of Medicine.
Dr. Beaver has devoted his career to making surgery safer for patients through minimally invasive techniques and improved peri-operative management. Dr. Beaver specializes in minimally invasive surgery for aortic and mitral valves --including transcatheter valve technology; as well as stent grafts for thoracic aortic surgery and arrythmia surgery.
Dr. Beaver has over 200 publications focusing on less invasive surgical strategies for Valve, Atrial Fibrillation and Thoracic Aortic Surgery. His research has been supported by the NIH, the State of Florida and multiple industry trials evaluating novel valves and stent grafts for thoracic aneurysms, as well as kidney protection strategies.
Dr. Beaver received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Wisconsin with honors. Dr. Beaver completed his general surgery residency at the University of Colorado. and cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Florida, where he also received an MPH with a focus on Health Policy.
Dr. Beaver has received numerous awards including Honorary Term Professor at The University of Florida. He has received numerous exemplary teaching awards from the college of medicine and an honorary Anderson Scholar Faculty award from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; as well as numerous customer service awards from UF Health Shands Hospital.
Dr. Beaver currently serves on the national Thoracic Surgery Residency Review Committee and is member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons.
From 1991-2006 Dr. Beaver was a member of The United Stated Army Reserve Medical Corps and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. In 2004, he received The Florida Medical Association President’s Humanitarian award for his service in Tikrit, Iraq and Asadabad, Afghanistan.
